Japan's back in the news

How can someone feel safe with the news changing about japans’ nuclear crisis? Now the governmental policies have been changed by the Japanese government. The people of Iitate Japan have been evacuated, about 85,000 people. The planting of rice and vegetables have been forbidden there. Get this, Iitate, Japan, where the Fukushima nuclear plant is located is the fourth largest producer of rice.
I fear that for so many reasons. I feel eventually I can be affected by unsafe radiation levels. I love rice! America might not import a lot of rice from Japan, but what about imports of finished products that contain rice. Even if the products don’t come straight from Japan. Japan exports rice to many countries America allows to import finished food products into our country. I just don’t want to find out five years from now that I have developed cancer because of ingestion of foods, with unsafe levels of radiation.
Should I be concerned? I don’t believe any in-depth investigations have been conducted. Taking the word of the executive branch for it isn’t comfortable for me.

Tyler Perry

Everyone knows Tyler Perry. I seen the few movies that he has directed such as Madea, I know I’ve been changed, and I can do bad all by myself, and I think this great theatrical piece can be both art and entertainment. So what do you guys think of the films made by Tyler Perry movies?
Tyler Perry is a very creative intelligent man. I think his movies are touching, inspiring, yet funny ass heck! He films about having faith, perseverance, and are from his own life experience and knowledge which makes it even better. Nothing is better than learning from your own life experience or others.
I think he do such a great job, all his movies are great hits, and I am hoping to see much more films directed by him.

Art VS. Entertainment

In class last week, we had to do a presentation on art vs. entertainment. Our teacher asked us what we thought art was and what was entertainment. We had a pretty long discussion about these two questions. Everybody had their own point of view. We even showed small video clips of movies and shows that are out to see what people thought was art or entertainment.

To me I think there is no one answer for these questions because everybody has their own perception when they are watching a television show or a movie. Art is a form of creativity as we talked about in our presentation and I think that everything we watch comes from some sort of creativity, even if it is just a funny reality show. Disney movies we see are a form of art. To make these Disney movies it had to come from some sort of creativity. These characters are drawn piece by piece and put together into a wonderful movie that kids and even I enjoy watching.

So is there really just one correct answer to these questions? Who is able to determine whether the shows on television or the movies we watch is art or entertainment? What do you think is art and what is entertainment?

What should be censored?

Continuing from the previous blog below from Olga Y., in class, the questions, “what should be censored” and “who can choose the censors” became an outbreak discussion in class. The question still remains, what SHOULD be censored? Of course, we as humans should automatically know and have a conscious of what needs to be censored. Censorship varies from many ages, places and time. For parents, I am sure sex and violence are surveyed to be censored from all kids shows and definitely a lot of evening shows when their children comes home from school.

Do we honestly lack censorship as much as we think we do? How do we adults verify violence? How do we know that little kids are not viewing that we, as adults, see as non-violence as violence? There is a article by Amy Benfer, in 2001 about banning censorship, she states a compelling study that she thought was fascinating to her; “When researchers asks young adults what media content they remember seeing as a child – either sexually or violent – that had a harmful or traumatic or disturbing effect. In the category of violence, you get answers like “Little House on the Prairie” and “The wizards of Oz.” It was’t what you would expect.”

So this can lead us to another question: Do sex and violence protect our children or do they prevent our kids from learning the critical thinking skills necessary for the democratic society?

Response discussion to the blog, "Lack of Censorship."

I definitely think it is an issue in our society today. I agree with this week's blog discussion by palee_v. I believe the lack of censorship in our society does cause harm, especially to young people. When we think about 1950's and earlier we think of modesty, conservatism, polite relations between people, and respect for others. Today, whenever we see a movie it will include lots of sex, violence, drugs, and lack of respect for one's parents or the elderly. I get shocked of what might be shown on cable television, sometimes it is embarrassing to watch some of the programs with my parents in the same room.

I do not proclaim total 100% censorship, I just believe that it should be harder for people (especially teenagers and kids) to access provocative programming. But now there is a different question that comes to mind, what exactly should be censored? Should we sensor sex or violence or both? And finally the most important question in my mind, who does the censoring? As a society whom do we allow such power of censorship...

Furthermore, I believe that clothing styles portrayed on television should be changed. I feel this way because with each year that I get older I see more "nudity while clothed." Women do not have much of respect for their bodies today, or so it seems. People that dress conservative are proclaimed as nerds or geeks. I do not think this is right. Once again, what we watch influences our styles of clothing, thinking, and behaving. Therefore, I believe greater censorship would benefit our society.

Medical Fanatics: Who Do You Trust for Online Health Information?

Medical Fanatics: Who Do You Trust for Online Health Information?: " While surfing the internet, do you find yourself second-guessing the validity of the articles that you read or just simply take it at ..."
Americans are so super busy, between careers, childcare, marriages, relationships and whatnot. But make no mistake, most of the time its running around in circular motions. We find it verry difficult to simply relax and enjoy some "me-time". I would like to suggest that we re-prioritze
and learn to use this time more contructively. For example, some soul-searching may be in order to discover our "true" likes and dislikes, making goals for the future and spending quality time with our loved ones. However, we feel an overwhelming need to be entertained. Perhaps, we waste a so much time, seeking outside distractions, that we miss the opportunity to discover what's really important in our day-to-day-lives.
