Response discussion to the blog, "Lack of Censorship."

I definitely think it is an issue in our society today. I agree with this week's blog discussion by palee_v. I believe the lack of censorship in our society does cause harm, especially to young people. When we think about 1950's and earlier we think of modesty, conservatism, polite relations between people, and respect for others. Today, whenever we see a movie it will include lots of sex, violence, drugs, and lack of respect for one's parents or the elderly. I get shocked of what might be shown on cable television, sometimes it is embarrassing to watch some of the programs with my parents in the same room.

I do not proclaim total 100% censorship, I just believe that it should be harder for people (especially teenagers and kids) to access provocative programming. But now there is a different question that comes to mind, what exactly should be censored? Should we sensor sex or violence or both? And finally the most important question in my mind, who does the censoring? As a society whom do we allow such power of censorship...

Furthermore, I believe that clothing styles portrayed on television should be changed. I feel this way because with each year that I get older I see more "nudity while clothed." Women do not have much of respect for their bodies today, or so it seems. People that dress conservative are proclaimed as nerds or geeks. I do not think this is right. Once again, what we watch influences our styles of clothing, thinking, and behaving. Therefore, I believe greater censorship would benefit our society.

  1. I totally agree with what you are saying. I do not think that everything on television should be censored, but there are certain things that should be. I liked how you talked about how women are less clothed. Little girls these days are so young and I see many everyday who are already wearing make-up and inappropriate clothes that are just not suitable for a 7,8,9 or 10 year old to be wearing.

  2. I agree that this is a big issue, but can be eliminated. What i mean by eliminated is blocking. I have parent control over my cable stations where i can control what my kids are able to watch and when they can watch it.I am the only person with the code. Yes there are still alot of shows and movies that have too much sex, voilence, and drugs in them but i do not allow my children to watch those types of shows, or movies. As far as what the people are wearing clothing wise, on TV should have no effect on people in the real world because if they are not old enough to buy their own clothes, then the parent should step up and not buy their child clothes that are not appropriate to wear.

  3. Unfortunately, it will probably be "prudes" that will censure programming. As far as today's clothing is concerned, at first I thought that women were MORE confidance in themselves and maybe it was just me that was ultra-conservative. But I now realize that it is not as much as more confidance, but lack of confidance, that would convince a woman to disrobe for public viewing. My parents used to say "why buy the cow, when you can get the milk for free"? The men of today will never fully respect a woman who shows everybody the goods. He may date you, call you, sleep with you and play house with you and be your babies daddy but chances are; he will NEVER fully commit to you, and why should he, when there are thousands of women who dress and look just like you. I see more breast at school than in the doctors' office. And I find it SAD.

  4. I agree with you Jacqueline. It is sad. As far as parental blocking goes, what's the use if your child can go to somebody else's home and watch what he or she wants? I think that in order for the censorship to work it has to be universal.

  5. I believe that there are a lot of parents who allow this to happen and are not in control of there children. Children now and days are so much influenced by what they see and learn from Tv. Its sad that u see little girls trying to do and act like grown women. I think its out of control and there is no way we can turn back from this. All we can do is try.

  6. I do agree that some women on tv especially those who come out in rap videos lack clothing. I believe that this sends out a bad message to girls and encourages them to dress inappropriately. When it comes to violence and sexual content on television i dont think that there is anything we can really do. the reason is because thats what people want to watch thats what people find entertaining these days. A lot has changed since the 1950's our values and morals have also changed kids these days grow up with diffrent mentalities. Its said to see that traditions and values are not much of importance and are slowly fading away

  7. I agree that television does have a lot of things that we don't want our children seeing. But there is not a whole lot we can do about it. It has gotten worse over the years, even the cartoons are different, it seems as if they are more violent and some of them just don't make any sense at all. It's up to the parents to monitor and control what their children watch. I know I do, and my kids even know what shows they are not allowed to watch.

  8. As far as the clothing concern, I feel that there are a lot of women do dress inappropriately. There are ways that you can still look sexy without showing too much. I think it gives men the wrong idea. I also agree that it sends out the wrong message to young girls. I am a mother of 3 girls, and my oldest is 7 so I have not had to encounter this yet and hopefully I won't.
