In class last week, we had to do a presentation on art vs. entertainment. Our teacher asked us what we thought art was and what was entertainment. We had a pretty long discussion about these two questions. Everybody had their own point of view. We even showed small video clips of movies and shows that are out to see what people thought was art or entertainment.
To me I think there is no one answer for these questions because everybody has their own perception when they are watching a television show or a movie. Art is a form of creativity as we talked about in our presentation and I think that everything we watch comes from some sort of creativity, even if it is just a funny reality show. Disney movies we see are a form of art. To make these Disney movies it had to come from some sort of creativity. These characters are drawn piece by piece and put together into a wonderful movie that kids and even I enjoy watching.
So is there really just one correct answer to these questions? Who is able to determine whether the shows on television or the movies we watch is art or entertainment? What do you think is art and what is entertainment?
When it comes to art and entertainement I belive that they both produce satisfaction to the viewer and both are forms of expression. It is up to each individual to decide what they consider art and what they consider entertainment. One example would be a picture of the twin towers collapsing on September eleventh. Some consider that a form of art while others consider it a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteI think that no one can determine if movies or TV shows are a form of art. Everyone has an their own opinon and their own definition of what art is. I believe that TV shows and movies are entertainment, but that is my opinon. Although the creaters of TV shows and movies are creating shows and films they may feel what they have created is art, but i believe it is just for viewers entertainment. What if a person created a very bad show or movie and they ranked zero viewers, do you think that, that creater would be upset because it did not entertain people, or would the creater be happy just because they feel they created something great like art?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica there is no way one can determine ART. I believe that if one is more into art then they will see things in a different perspective. I mean out of both clips last week i thought of the cop video as entertainment. It was funny and fun to watch. The titanic video clip is more to me as art/entertainment. I say this because the way the movie was made with the way people lived back then The clothes they wore the way they lived and just the ship and all its detail is just so beautiful which relates to art. I say it also is entertaining because watching the movie was very interesting, it was funny, sad, lots of action, and the characters where very good.So basically what i am saying is it depends on how you feel as to when you are watching a movie or show if it is art or entertainment. They both go hand in hand, it depends on you.
ReplyDeleteI can't even call the regergitated swill on TV art. It is strickly for entertainment purposes, and our intelligence is being numbed by this mess, everyday. In my home, the TV is on for the weather channel, animal planet, A&E, TNT or nothing. I can't remember the last time I saw anything on another channel that was worth watching. As far as the question regarding "Art or Entertainment", the answer depends on who is watching what and their individual perception.
ReplyDeleteI think that art is something that is created by another human being. I think entertainment is just like art; it must be created and put together in a way that would appeal to the aduince. I think we view art differently from entertainment because we do not fully comprehend how much time goes into creation of both. For example, is Britney Spears concert art?
ReplyDeleteI think entertainment is a opinion and art is not. If art is defined as the products of human creativity, How can one decide what is created? Everything that is an opinion has an opposite (Entertainment/boredom pretty/ugly good/bad smart/stupid cool/lame...) What is the opposite of art? the only opinion that I see involved in art is if it's what type of art it is good art or bad art or how ever you chose to label the art.
ReplyDeleteArt versus entertainment is determined on an individual basis. At this point, it's a matter of opinion because there aren't any set parameters which determine what is art versus entertainment. What's good to one person could easily be interpreted by another as bad or evil.
ReplyDeleteI think I somewhat agree with what mr. Thompson said about art and entertainment. That entertainment is a sub catagory of art. That sounds like a better explanation to me. It sets aside a rubric in judging between the two. What I didn't agree with was when he said that art is created. I feel that created is the wrong word to be used. No man has created anything. Mankind's only makes things or images that he has seen before. Tell me who in the world or throughout history has rendered to the world something they have not gazed upon, or heard described to them by someone?
ReplyDeletemy Perception of art is very diffrent from my perception of entetainment. An artist put their thought and felling into their art project, and unless you know the artist themselves you never know what their true felling when making their art. In entetainment you can pretty much quess what the message is the artist want to deliver.
ReplyDeleteI agree that everyone has their own opinion on what art and entertainment is. To each is own. But I do believe that the two could be combined as one say, perhaps a broadway musical could be both arts and entertainment. In my own opinion, TV is only for entertainment.
